A Porsche Hybrid, at the 2010 New York Auto Show
Is that a hybrid Porsche 911 GT3 parked at the 2010 New York International Auto Show? Why yes, yes it is. In fact, there were dozens of various hybrids from every auto maker at the 2010 NY Show. It’s the in thing, after all.
But when a classic race car and luxury performance maker like Porsche shows up with their 911 GT3 R Hybrid, and parks it in a public lot, it’s going to get gawked at. Maybe that was the plan.
Porsche’s “racing lab” came up with their 40,000-RPM electric hybrid engine, which kicks the butt of most other gas-electric rides. The lucky driver of this Porsche can direct the power generated, up to 120 kilowatts, or 60 kilowatts per front motor, to the front wheels at will.
The Porsche 911 GT3R (long enough name?) follows the basic rechargeable hybrid tech – a generator behind each wheel, which gets its power from braking and acceleration.
