Porsche Cayenne and Panamera May Go Extinct Under VW

So long, Panamera, we hardly knew Ye. According to a report at Car Magazine, the VW-Porsche merger would mean an end to larger Porsche vehicles – the Cayenne and Panamera. Sad really, Panamera hasn’t been officially released more then a few months!

According to Car Mag & World Car Fans: While the models would likely survive until 2016, it appears VW’s Chairman, Ferdinand Piëch, wants Porsche to focus on sports cars instead of doing a little bit of everything. In a rather ironic turn of events, Piëch will effectively kill off the models spearheaded by ousted Porsche boss Wendelin Wiedeking. As you may recall, Wiedeking was one of the masterminds behind Porsche’s failed attempt to takeover Volkswagen.

Despite having mixed feelings about the Cayenne, it’s undeniable that the sport-ute was a huge money maker for Porsche. This makes a possible death sentence a little questionable, especially since Piëch wants to double Porsche sales in four years. To accomplish this goal, Volkswagen will likely develop a shared platform that would underpin a new entry-level Porsche as well as a sporty new VW or Audi.

2010 Porsche Panamera – Fastest Four Door Car

Last year, GM had a tiny bit of good news as their Cadillac brand CTS-V captured “fastest four door production car” status by completing Nürburgring’s north loop in under eight minutes. This year, Porsche stole that honor with seconds to spare. The all new 2010 Panamera, Porsche’s first four door sedan, came in 7 mins 56 sec, 3 seconds faster then Caddy. But who’s counting?

The 500-horsepower Panamera Turbo completed this task last week, securing a new world record for the European auto maker. We’d love to see a match-up between the two luxury car giants. (crosses fingers)

Want to Tour a Porsche Assembly Plant?

It’s good to see that cars aren’t COMPLETELY constructed by machines these days. And to prove it (and promote the new Porsche Panamera) the German auto maker has reopened their Leipzig plant to tours.

Plant tours are free and can be booked online

Porsche has once again opened up its Leipzig plant to the public, allowing tours of the facility where the new Porsche Panamera is built.

Tours of the plant had been suspended for 8 months due to construction, as Porsche expanded the plant by 22,000 square meters to accommodate the increased production capacity required to assemble the new Panamera model.

Visitors are now permitted to experience the assembly of the Panamera at the Leipzig plant, located in the German state of Saxony, where the Cayenne SUV is also built. Tours are free and can be booked online at www.porsche-leipzig.com.

The Panamera is 4-door, 4-seat coupe/Gran Turismo model that will come with a couple of high-powered V8 engines, 400 hp for the rear-wheel drive Panamera S and all-wheel drive for the Panamera 4S and Panamera Turbo which packs 500hp, as well as a 300hp V6 for the base Panamera. Porsche promises a hybrid version will follow sometime later. The Panamera was premiered at the Auto Shanghai event on April 19 and will go on sale in Europe starting in September.

Thanks to Teamspeed.com and World Car Fans for sneaking this excellent spy shot of the Porsche Panamera instrument panel. First and foremost, what’s with all those buttons? Is this a Porsche or the Mach 5? Maybe Porsche will be a new Bond car, or they are gearing up for a guest shot on the new Knight Rider. The steering wheel is also huge, but we will forgive it. Porsche probably stole it off the Cayenne.

If that doesn’t wet your appetite enough, we also snagged a quick spy video from Edmunds – featuring the Porsche Panamera cruising around a desert test track, right out of a Mad Max feature!

Thanks to two wonderful websites (Globalmotors.net and our favorite car nuts Jalopnik) we’ve found some spy shots of the 4-door Porsche concept Panamera – way better than previous teaser shots of Panamera Porsche has supplied. Much to our surprise the vehicle looks amazing! (Admittedly, we were slightly worried about Porsche’s final product) Check out the spy shots and let us know what you think.

Porsche Panamera Revealed! Sort Of…

Recently, Porsche released teaser images of the Panamera sedan concept. It taunted us with a front end shot peeking out of its futuristic garage, while older siblings like the 911 and Cayenne waiting with great anticipation. Well, now those other Porsche vehicles and all Porsche fans can breath again, as the auto maker officially released sketches of their four door 9ff Panamera concept car.

Final Panamera designs are still a mystery – the vehicle has Porsche’s signature 9ff wheels and a rear bumper diffuser. Stay tuned to our blog for more updates and official photos of the Panamera when productioin models come to life.
